Common Fleas Found in Loomis, CA

Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides Felis)

In Loomis, the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is a common issue for pet owners. These small, reddish-brown insects are about 1/8 inch long and live on cats and dogs, feeding on their blood. This can lead to irritation, hair loss, and anemia in severe cases. Cat fleas also bite humans, resulting in red, itchy welts and potential allergic reactions.

The life cycle of the cat flea includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Female fleas can lay between 20-50 eggs daily, which fall into carpets and bedding. The larvae feed on dried blood and thrive in humid conditions. The full life cycle lasts around 18 days, and adult fleas can survive on a host for up to 40 days.

Dog fleas (C. Canis)

Ctenocephalides canis, commonly known as dog fleas, are parasitic pests primarily affecting dogs but can also infest cats and humans. These fleas resemble cat fleas but are less common in California. They are small, wingless, and reddish-brown, making them hard to detect. Dog fleas cause itching and discomfort by feeding on the blood of their hosts, and they can also transmit diseases and parasites like tapeworms.

Dog fleas follow a life cycle with stages of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The eggs are often dislodged from the host, landing on bedding or carpets. Larvae consume organic material and flea excrement. Pupae develop within cocoons, staying dormant for months if necessary. Adults live for several weeks, continually feeding and reproducing.

Sticktight fleas (Echidnophaga Gallinacea)

Sticktight fleas commonly infest ground squirrels and poultry, attaching to the ears and eyes of their hosts, which can cause discomfort and health concerns. Pets that roam outdoors, especially in areas with ground squirrels, are at higher risk. Regular pet inspections are vital to catching infestations early.

Treating both pets and their environment is necessary. Make sure to treat both your pet and its bedding on the same day. For homes with outdoor pets, inspect and treat indoor and outdoor spaces thoroughly.

Our Flea Control Process is Simple

Flea Inspection

Loomis Pest Control’s flea service kicks off with a thorough inspection of your yard, focusing on areas where fleas thrive, such as spots where your pets spend time. This allows us to create a targeted treatment approach. Our technicians assess all outdoor areas, including shaded regions and areas with dense foliage.

For indoor spaces, we inspect baseboards, cracks, and crevices where fleas like to hide. We also look at pet bedding, carpets, and upholstered furniture to find any hidden infestations. Proper identification of flea-prone areas ensures a successful treatment.

Initial Treatment

Before your flea treatment, there are a few preparations. Mow the lawn outside. Inside, clear floors of items like toys and rugs. Vacuum carpets, under beds, and in closets, then dispose of the vacuum bag. Sweep and mop all floors. Treat your pets and wash their bedding on the same day. The house must be empty for 2-3 hours while the treatment dries.

We start with an inspection of your yard, treating flea hotspots over an area up to half an acre. Indoors, we use liquid treatments along baseboards, cracks, and in pet play areas. The floors might be slippery after treatment, but they dry quickly. Using fans can help accelerate drying time.

Follow-Up Treatment

Loomis Pest Control offers a complimentary follow-up service two weeks after the first flea treatment to ensure full eradication. Any newly hatched fleas are targeted during this second visit. Our technician will apply the same thorough treatment, focusing on the areas previously treated.

We recommend regular vacuuming and sweeping after the first treatment to encourage any remaining flea eggs to hatch. This makes the follow-up treatment even more effective. Additionally, keeping your pets treated and their bedding clean is essential to avoid re-infestation.

Loomis Flea Control FAQs

Fleas are small, reddish-brown insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals like pets. These pests have flattened bodies, making it easy for them to hide in fur. They can jump great distances thanks to their powerful hind legs.
Fleas can bite both pets and humans, leaving behind itchy red marks. Their bites can sometimes trigger allergic reactions or lead to infections from scratching. Fleas are also capable of spreading diseases like tapeworms and murine typhus.
Before treatment, clear items off floors and thoroughly vacuum carpets, under beds, and closets. Dispose of the vacuum bag outside. After treatment, vacuum again once the area is dry. Treat pets on the same day to prevent reinfestation.
Following the initial treatment, we will return in two weeks for a follow-up. Another treatment will occur two weeks later, with continued service potentially needed for prevention.
